Hands up for public art

Kāpiti artist Bodhi Vincent has created a superb sculpture featuring a new born baby nestled in a giant hand.
The sculpture is on the front lawn outside the Kāpiti Police Station in Paraparaumu.
The work, commissioned by the Kāpiti Voices Against Violence, is an outstanding and unmissable piece of public art.
Mr Vincent says the sculpture has largely been a labour of love.
The baby is carved from volcanic rock and the hand is modified concrete.
“I used local greywacke sand. The hand is on a steel cage and then concreted. I then carved back into it.”
The message of the piece is powerful not only in its symbolism but also in its impressive size.
Let’s hope we see a lot more of this local public art.
