A fundraiser to be held at Te Raukura ki Kāpiti on 17 March, 2023 aims to raise funds for the people of Whangārei.  Kāpiti Coast District Council has been allocated Whangarei as part of “adopt a community”, being run by Local Government New Zealand.

Mayor Janet Holborow says the scheme helps target financial help to a particular area of need.

“Adopt a community matches council with a council and community badly hit by the cyclone.  It’s a nationwide initiative that connects councils with some of the most devastated regions – community to community and a way for mayors and councils to reach out and support the mayors and councils that have been hit hard, by raising money for their communities.”

To help boost the fund, Mayor Holborow has invited some of Kāpiti’s most well-known musicians to perform to support the cause.

“It’s really great that so many of our top musicians have agreed to play – it will be a real show-case of local talent.”

The line-up includes Andrew London, Charlotte Kerrigan, Steph Casey, In The Shallow, AJ Crawshaw, Phil Simmonds, Michelle Scullion and Jess Deacon.  Tickets are being sold on a ‘Pay what you can afford basis’ starting at $20.

All funds raised will be forwarded to the Whangārei Mayoral Relief Fund and allocated to those in most need using select criteria. Should we reach a point where we have met the needs of our community in this response, we will reallocate any remaining funds from your donations to other Cyclone Gabrielle-affected districts within Aotearoa.

Whangārei Mayor Vince Cocurullo says that aside from financial support, another key area where people can help is to visit the area, and encourage our friends to do the same.

“Whangārei is open for business.  We’ve been hit hard, but they’re rebuilding.  Local businesses are feeling the strain from reduced visitor numbers and the local economy is suffering.”

Cocurullo says that full access to Northland will soon be restored, and they hope to see national and international visitors return to the District.  For more details go to WhangareiNZ.com
