Kāpiti gets youth Work Ready

Work Ready Kāpiti held a very successful Youth and Employer Mixer last night at the Whitireia Campus with many business leaders present to discuss job opportunities for young people in Kāpiti.

Work Ready Kāpiti is a not-for-profit, committed to helping 16-25 year olds transition into local employment. It is a joint initiative between The Kāpiti Coast Chamber of Commerce, The Kāpiti Coast District Council and The Youth Employment Strategy Group. This group brings together a range of experience and expertise to build enduring relationships between our youth and Kāpiti employers.

Last night’s event aimed at connecting employers and young people, as well as talking about the Youth Pathway to Employment Workbook, and how a young person can get ‘work ready’ for a job in Kāpiti.

Employers reported a positive response to the expo format and it was clear there has been a positive uptake of the Work Ready Passport book which has been well received by local schools.

Skills NZ Manager Bruce Morgan, a primary driver of the project, said the book had been designed by employers and enables young job seekers to have a good interview. “We are very grateful to local schools for embedding this program into their curriculum.”

Kāpiti Chamber co-chair Julene Hope said there are unprecedented employment opportunities for young people here in Kāpiti. “It is important to provide appropriate pathways for young people into work and the Passport is very helpful,” she said.
