Well-qualified candidates

We are exceedingly fortunate in having so many well-qualified candidates offering themselves for the forthcoming election, and it’s good to see that they are not all self-serving, middle-aged, white males.

Many candidates seem to be really concerned for the well-being of our community, particularly the less advantaged and the elderly. With our seniors’ demographic the country’s highest, housing them and catering to their special needs must be one of our largest industries, and is likely to grow in importance as the baby boomers begin retiring. However, if we are to continue to attract these people to our region we must ensure we continue to foster an environment congenial to them. Allowing training school helicopter flights over built up areas, and the possibility of an expressway passing through the middle of the desirable residential areas are hardly conducive to this.

Candidates such as Mayor Jenny Rowan, Paraparaumu Ward candidates Marilyn Stephens and Beryl Barr, and Regional Councillor Nigel Wilson, in particular, have the qualities and experience to ensure the best interests of ordinary citizens and communities are put first.
