Man in custody following serious assault

Inspector Phil Ward, Acting Manawatū Area Commander says one person has been taken into custody following an earlier Police operation.

At around 11:50am, emergency services were called to an address on Whangaehu Village Road, north of Marton following reports of a serious assault.

Inspector Ward says the victim was transported to hospital in a critical condition. He says the alleged offender left the scene in a vehicle before Police arrival.

“Police located and pursued that vehicle as it travelled towards Foxton, where it was later abandoned on Bergin Road at around 12:40pm.

“The man was located and taken into custody in the vicinity of the Foxton Golf Club just before 3:30pm,” says Inspector Ward.

He says investigations into the assault remain ongoing and Police are not looking for anybody else in relation to the vehicle abandoned on Bergin Road.

“We would like to thank the members of the public for their cooperation while Police worked to locate this man.”

Inspector Ward says charges are being considered.
