Creative Mud and Quirky Strokes, the May exhibition at the Ōtaki Pottery Club’s Tote
Modern Gallery Opens April 30
The Ōtaki Pottery Club has announced the May exhibition at the Tote Modern Gallery titled Creative Mud and Quirky Strokes, showcasing the ceramic works of guest artist Jojo Hare, and the paintings of Holly Chapman.
Jojo will be presenting an eclectic mix of ceramic wares—bowls and cups, platters and more. She explains, “I take my inspirations from all aspects of nature and use fauna and flora in some of my creations. I make what I enjoy creating and that is reflected in my pieces.”
Jojo finds happiness in teaching others the way of pottery too. “I have been a pottery tutor for a few years now and really enjoy seeing the creativity bloom in others.” She also notes, “My domestic ware is dishwasher and microwave safe because who has time to handwash your ceramics.”
Holly shows what happens when imagination and sustainability come together to create art. Holly tells us of her upcycling, “My artwork begins life as abandoned or unwanted paintings—pieces I discover in op shops, garage sales, and the tip. Into these old works, I paint my quirky animals. They appear as if they’ve always belonged there and completely taking over the moment. I love the contrast between a traditional painting and the sudden appearance of a cheeky or curious animal bringing humour and personality to the piece.”
The grand opening of the exhibition will be held on Thursday 30 April with a reception at the gallery from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Please come along for complimentary drinks and nibbles, an opportunity to meet the artists, and the first opportunity to purchase the featured works.
