Re-elected Kāpiti Mayor Janet Holborow told the inaugural gathering of newly elected members that while the new triennium offers many challenges she is confident the new Council is well equipped to handle any adversity.
“The next three years won’t be easy. The ongoing pressure of Central Government reform will see continuing changes to the way we operate, and to our roles and responsibilities.”
The inauguration ceremony which also encapsulates the first official meeting of the new council was held before an appreciative audience at Te Raukura ki Kāpiti.
In her inaugural address Mayor Holborow thanked council’s iwi partners for their warm welcome.
“I’d like to acknowledge Koro Don te Maipi for his aroha and awhi over many years, and for all he did in the community. It was a devastating loss for us all when he left us a few months ago. It feels strange that he’s not here, but we feel his wairua.
“One of the highlights of the last term which he was part of was refreshing our relationship with mana whenua, and I look forward to strengthening and building our partnership over the next three years,” says Mayor Holborow.
She also paid tribute to previous Deputy Mayor Lawrence Kirby. “Your insight, wisdom and support were unwavering. Your principles are true, and your heart is with your community. You will be missed at Council, but your impact will continue to resonate across our community through the work you’ve done and will continue to do.”
Mayor Holborow also formally announced the new Deputy Mayor would be third-time councillor Martin Halliday. “You are the most hardworking councillor I’ve seen, and you truly deserve this position. You deeply care for the community and put your all into supporting and advocating for your people. I look forward to working with you for the next three years.”
Mayor Holborow says she is excited about the new elected members and what everyone brings to their role. “The talent, skill, passion and dedication in this group of people is incredible. Kāpiti is in good hands.
“I’d particularly like to congratulate our first Māori Ward Councillor Himiona Grace. Himiona, you’ll be building the waka while sailing it, and I’m sure you’re up to the task. We’ll all grab a paddle and help where we can.”
Mayor Holborow acknowledged the presence of re-elected Porirua Mayor Anita Baker and congratulated Daran Ponter on his re-election as chair of Greater Wellington and said she also look forward to continuing to work with our local representative Penny Gaylor.
“I’d like to acknowledge our Council staff. Every day I see how they work with energy and commitment. To Chief Executive Darren Edwards, my thanks for the work you do leading the organisation and supporting me and our other 30 elected members.
“I look forward to another three years working as one team with staff as we work together for the future of our district.”
“Thank you for showing your trust in me to continue as Mayor. I feel honoured to be given the opportunity to serve our district for another three years.”
