Martin Halliday in Kāpiti Mayoral race

Kāpiti Coaster Martin Halliday says he is promising to bring the community’s voice to a council that doesn’t seem to be listening, as he announces that he is stepping up for the position of Kāpiti Coast Mayor and as Ward Councillor for Paraparaumu.
Having raised his family and owned an award winning business on the Kāpiti Coast over the past 10 years, Mr Halliday says he feels privileged to call Kāpiti his home.
“The Kids have left home and the business has been sold, I feel that I have a skill set and life experience that will allow me to be an asset to my community.”
Mr Halliday says he is aware that the Kāpiti Coast is coming into a time of change. “Transmission Gully, it’s impact on affordable housing, economic development and growth will have long reaching consequences which will needed to be addressed,” he says.
“This will need to be balanced with connecting our communities, building community resilience in the wake of the climate emergency being declared while protecting our individual townships’ identities. As Mayor I will take a proactive rather than a reactive approach to the coming issues we all face as a community”
Mr Halliday is a founding trustee and Deputy chair of the Kāpiti Economic Development Agency as well as a founding trustee of the Guardians of the Kāpiti Marine Reserve. He is also involved with Low Carbon Kāpiti, Whirlwind, Kāpiti Community Housing Collective and other community groups.
“My direct experiences in dealings with council, the oral submissions I have delivered and community issues that I have made it my business to assist in, have given me insight into how our council currently works. This led to my decision to stand as Mayor. Our council needs to ensure that it is getting the basics right. I will ensure effective communication and engagement with the community as we move forward.’ says Mr Halliday.
