Driving and Riding the Rightway in Kāpiti

Kāpiti based Rightway Driving Academy has been in operation since May this year and offers driving lessons and motorcycle training and testing at all levels.
Peter Hookham established Rightway Driving Academy after leaving the New Zealand Transport Agency and following nearly 40 years in the transport industry in the UK and New Zealand.
“A substantial amount of my career was spent in analysing accidents, designing safety schemes and working with Police and other road safety educators. We used the 3 E’s and they are still relevant today” says Peter. Engineering, Education and Enforcement have been the backbone of accident reduction over many years.
Whilst this thinking has been superseded by the safe system approach, Peter suggests that a stronger emphasis needs to be put onto Education.
“Motorcycle riders in particular think that they are amazing riders, however the truth is that everyone can improve their skills, and should take the opportunity to do so.”
Peter says he is passionate about road safety and his mantra is making sure every individual is equipped with the skills and knowledge to drive safely right from the start.
“The main reason I formed Rightway was to play my part in reducing road casualties by having a direct influence on those that are using the roads, whether it be on two or four wheels. I want my students to become safe, confident and competent riders and drivers”.
Peter holds a Driving Instructors endorsement for class 1 (cars) and Class 6 (motorcycles) and is an accredited assessor for motorcycle Basic Handling Skills testing, along with CBTA restricted and full training and testing. Peter is also active in the Institute of Advanced Motorists both nationally and regionally, is a member of the NZ Institute of Driver Educators and the Kāpiti Chamber of Commerce.
Peter offers a full range of options for motorcycle training and testing and driver training from learning to drive to mature driver refreshers, all delivered in Kāpiti.
