Fresh from a sell-out season in Circa, comedian Pinky Agnew will be leading the annual comedy debate in Paraparaumu for the very last time.
Each year the Paraparaumu Branch of the Labour Party hold a comedy debate bringing together talent from all over New Zealand, to debate a topic loosely associated with politics. This year the moot is ‘That it’s time for a change’ with Pinky Agnew captaining the affirmative team which includes Graham Kelly (former MP) and Kieran McAnulty, the Wairarapa candidate.
Ōtaki candidate Rob McCann will be leading the negative with support from Iain Lees-Galloway and Steph Lewis (Whanganui candidate).
“It’s going to be tough,” says Mr McCann. “We took time out from the local campaign to watch the final night of ‘Destination Beehive’, a musical comedy written by Pinky and Lorae Parry, and I haven’t laughed so much in years. Pinky is a genius, so the bar will be set really high by her, so I suspect the rest of us will just have to walk under it.”
This will be Pinky’s 16th debate in a row and debate organiser Beryl Barr says Pinky has been the backbone of the event each year. If you want to see the best in the business before she hangs up her debating hat, you might want to book your ticket now.
Bringing some semblance of order to the comedy debating will the Annette King who is retiring from Parliament at this election. As the chairperson, Annette has the authority to declare the winner, so there’s a possibility she will be channeling her inner Winston Peters.
