Water meters divide Ōtaki Board candidates

In a surprise response during question time two of the three Ōtaki Community Board by-election candidates told a full Ōtaki meeting they favoured the introduction of water meters.

Annie Bythell said she thought water meters were a good idea but she didn’t like the process by which they were introduced.

Christine Papps said, “Yes, I am definitely in favour of water meters.

The final candidate to speak on the topic was Jackie Elliott who said she was strongly against the introduction of water meters, adding “Storage is important and in the long run is a lot cheaper.”

Ms Elliott was a primary organiser of a petition of over 8000 signatures calling for a ratepayer referendum on water meters which was subsequently rejected by Council.

The meeting, hosted by the Ōtaki Rotary Club, was chaired by popular Beach FM announcer Nigel Hopkins.

Voting papers are out and must be received by the returning officer Jude Wadsworth by Noon, Wednesday 31 October 2012.

Ms Wadsworth said early voting numbers were very positive and it was possible the last by-election return of 41% could be exceeded.
