Top Sports Event for Kāpiti

Top grade hockey debuted at the Kāpiti Sports Turf at Mazengarb Reserve with the hosting of Wellington men’s Premier 1 Hockey championship games last Saturday.
Kāpiti Turf trustee Dave Jennings said this notable sports event for Kāpiti has come about because we now have one of the best hockey turfs in the Wellington region. “The mix of visiting and local spectators enjoyed plenty of action on the turf.
“The first game was a curtain raiser between two Women’s Premier 3 teams our very own Big Save Kāpiti team and Hutt. Big Save Kāpiti defeated Hutt 3-2 having fought back from 0-2 down. This team is undefeated in their quest for promotion to Premier 2,” said Mr Jennings.
This was followed by two Men’s Premier 1 games: Harbour City v Hutt and Indians v Transact Victoria. The first game was hard fought with Harbour City in the match until the last 5 minutes when Hutt scored against the run of play for a 4-2 victory.
The second game was a very open and free flowing game with Indians defeating Transact Victoria 8-3. Victoria were in the game for the first half and missed a couple of opportunities in front of goal but Indians got on top in the second half with some spectacular goals.
Mr Jennings said the new pavilion and changing rooms at the Kāpiti Sports Turf is currently under construction at a total cost of around $1.4million. “This has been funded by a Lotteries grant of $600,000 and other grants and support from KCDC, Big Save Furniture, Pub Charity, Lion Foundation and Endeavour Trust. Kāpiti Turf Trust is continuing to raise additional funds to complete the fitout. The pavilion will be officially opened in early September.”
Mr Jennings said it is hoped that the new pavilion will lead to Premier 1 games becoming an annual event in Kāpiti.
