Got a pup who loves to run and play?There are heaps of places across the coast for your doggos to get out and explore – whether it’s at the beach, a park or reserve, or a fenced dog park.
Check the dog exercise zones to see where our on- and off-leash areas are. Need some further inspiration? Ōtaki Dog Park on Aotaki Street is fully fenced. Council recently upgraded the park, adding a separation fence to create low energy and high energy zones. Or for a bit more space, explore Wesley Knight Park in Paraparaumu, offering a secure environment for your dog to run free.

Kāpiti Coast District Council provides on-lead and off-lead dog exercise areas across the Kāpiti Coast, including beaches, parks, sports grounds, and one securely fenced dog park in Ōtaki.
Dog access rules change in some beach areas between summer and winter. Always check the dog access maps before you visit.

Ōtaki Dog Park
About the park
Ōtaki Dog Park is designed to give dogs a safe space to run, play, and socialise off-lead.
The park includes:
- secure fencing
- a double-gated entry area
- open space for exercise and play
- dog agility and obstacle features
- drinking water for dogs
- dog waste bag dispensers.
The fully fenced layout helps provide a safe environment for dogs and owners.
What to expect
Dogs using the park must still remain under owner control at all times.
Owners should:
- supervise their dogs
- clean up after their dogs
- make sure dogs behave safely around other people and animals.
Seasonal dog beach zones
Where your dog can go on the beach changes during the year.
Winter dog beach zones
Winter zones apply from the end of daylight saving to 30 November.
Summer dog beach zones
Summer zones apply from 1 December to the end of daylight saving.
Check the dog access maps before visiting beaches in Ōtaki, Waikanae, Paraparaumu, Raumati, Paekākāriki, Te Horo, and Peka Peka.
Check the seasonal beach zones
Dogs at sports grounds and parks
Dogs are allowed on-lead at sports grounds.
Dogs are not allowed:
- on playing fields
- between playing fields.
This helps keep community sports fields clean and safe.

Dogs near playgrounds and equipment
When your dog is near playgrounds or playground equipment, you must:
- keep your dog on a lead
- keep your dog at least 10 metres away.
Places where dogs are not allowed
Dogs are not allowed on the Te Araroa Paekākāriki Escarpment Track.
