Candidate – Waikanae Ward
“Back to the Future – I’ve been part of the Waikanae Beach community since 1974, when my parents built our family home here. As a long-time advocate for Kāpiti’s heritage and environment, I co-authored Waikanae – Past & Present (1988) and wrote Tararua (1994) and Kāpiti (1999), which won a Montana Book Award.

“As a concerned resident, I co-founded KRAP (Kāpiti Ratepayers Against Pollution) to campaign for improved sewage infrastructure. Since 2009, I’ve been active in dune restoration, planting erosion- resistant natives. More recently, I’ve led a volunteer project regenerating 30 hectares of farmland into podocarp forest in Queen Elizabeth Park.
“If elected, my priorities are:
- Promoting Kāpiti as a visitor destination
- Fairer rates (reversing the land/capital values ratio)
- Sound, informed decision-making grounded in 50 years of local knowledge
“Far-sighted decisions, like Kāpiti’s early adoption of water meters, have helped us remain independent of Greater Wellington. I want to see us continue making wise, community-focused choices that rise above personal politics.
“Vote Chris Maclean for the Waikanae Ward, Kāpiti Coast District Council.”
All candidates are offered the opportunity to submit a profile and photo for the position they are standing for.
