Shaky ground as Magnitude 4.1 earthquake strikes Kapiti – Porirua

A magnitude 4.1 earthquake has struck 27km north of Wellington at 10pm last night and the epicentre was around 10km north-west of Porirua.

The quake hit at a depth of 20km according to GeoNet, the Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey.

It may have been felt in Blenheim, French Pass, Levin, Martinborough, Masterton, Paraparaumu, Picton, Wellington, and surrounding localities.

GeoNet says that, so far, it’s received more than 13,000 reports from people who felt the tremor. A second, weaker tremor was picked up in the same location fifty minutes later, at 10.55pm.

The aftershock was measured at magnitude 2.7
