Charges following motorway protest

Restore Passenger Rail protesters caused major disruption to the capital’s commuter traffic today, this time atop a gantry above State Highway 1.

The remaining protester on the gantry from this morning’s protest on the Wellington Motorway was removed and normal traffic flow was able to resume.

Police say two people have been charged in relation to the protest activity.

A 49-year-old man is due to appear in Wellington District Court tomorrow on charges of endangering transport and breaching bail conditions.

A 55-year-old woman is due to appear today on a charge of endangering transport.

A member of the public appeared to try and physically remove protesters from the road.

Once the protesters were removed, the road was reopened.
