The Grey Power organised election meeting, held in Waikanae on Friday, saw a vibrant exchange of ideas during a flux of challenge and response from a fiercely engaged Waikanae audience.

Chaired by former deputy mayor Roger Booth, the crowded hall put the candidates to the test with plenty of searching questions.

Highlighted speakers

Mayoral candidate Rob McCann enjoyed a warm reception from an enthusiastic and politically astute constituency at the Waikanae community centre. McCann’s assured display continues a trend as he has generally been regarded as mayoral race frontrunner.

Incumbent districtwide councillor Jackie Elliott drew warm favour, describing KCDC’s rate rise of 10 percent annually as a cruel reality for limited income residents in the Waikanae electorate. Cr Elliott responded to an audience inquiry regarding KCDC’s increasing debt levels by stating her continued commitment to debt reduction, she also spoke to the need for long-term planning around Kāpiti’s projected growth, focusing on the protection and promotion of green spaces, a message well received by the Waikanae constituency on the day.

Ian Powell was both witty and wise among the Districtwide candidates and Lawrence Kirby connected very well.

Waikanae’s own ward had two stand out performers, the youngest candidate on stage Jordon Wansbrough received popular support as he advocated for a youth, disability and Maori voice on council to represent those he sees as currently under-represented politically in Kāpiti.

Former Regional Councillor for Kāpiti, Nigel Wilson, advocated bringing back Waikanae’s recycling station, reinstating the Waikanae library, protecting and restoring Waikanae community halls, as well as ensuring maintenance for critical infrastructure in Waikanae – all of which had the crowd vigorously nodding in agreement and supporting with assured applause.

Regional Council candidate Asher Wilson-Goldman put in another impressive display of knowledge and advocacy, following on from his strong performance at the recent Chamber of Commerce meeting.

The next Grey Power candidates outing will be held at the same venue (Waikanae Community Centre) on Monday 12 September 6pm – 9pm. Surely a show not to be missed.
