A Sign of the Times in Kapiti

Sign of the times - Kapiti political aspirants Sophie Handford (Paekakariki-Raumati Ward), Asher Wilson-Goldman (Greater Wellington), and Rob McCann (Mayor) joining in the great Kapiti sign rush

It is the season of the sign. They will come in all shapes and sizes and offer all sorts of magic cures for what ails society. They will be controversial, some colourful, some bland, some that will leave you shaking your head with the old ‘hey what were they thinking’.

Of course they are the political signs that temporarily dominate the streetscape with the thoughts and slogans of keen candidates anxious for your support.

Whatever your reaction to the messages, the cheesy smiles and the hopeful slogans – the signs are important reminders that we live in a country where the public can choose who will represent them.

And that in turn is a reminder to use that right, and Vote.

As Jefferson said – “We do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate.”
