Duncan’s Brewing Company of Kāpiti has just installed 70 solar panels producing 30 kilowatts of power which will supply enough grunt to run the entire operation in their Sheffield St plant.
Iain McIsaac from Green Van Solar was on site last week installing the system and says it will drastically reduce the brewery’s power bill.
“Increasing numbers of businesses and residential properties are turning to solar as a viable option and are taking the move as an investment in their home or business. Its a great way to save on power bills and its clean energy,” says Mr McIsaac who has been installing solar systems for over 12 years.
He says the solar option is popular in Kāpiti and recently completed an installation in Waikanae that produces 26kw and has a project ahead for a solar farm producing 100kw.
Duncan’s Brewing owner George Duncan says the solar option was the right move for them.
“The price is right now and it makes sense financially. We have a lease to buy arrangement and it will be ours in five years. The system requires no maintenance which is a big feature for us and it has a 25 year warranty,” says Mr Duncan whose brewery produces 150,000 litres of beer annually.
He says the solar option made sense as they use a lot of power and power prices are constantly rising.
“We are expanding and the business uses increased power as demand grows,” says Mr Duncan, with the popular Kāpiti brewer now exporting about 40% of their product range.
