Horowhenua Grief Group starting up

Local women who have lost family members to suicide recently partnered to create a grief group intended to support the whanau of loved ones who have committed suicide.
Regular meetings of the Horowhenua Grief Group (HGG) will be held in a private room at Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō (the Levin public library) starting on Wednesday 1 May 2019 from 7:00PM-8:30PM.
This group is the brain child of Linda Whiti of Shannon and was created to address the lack of local grief support resources. Since some people can be hesitant to participate in groups that are religiously affiliated, the Levin library makes a good place to offer a non-denominational space in which all are welcome.
Molly Burke, Levin resident and co-creator of the group who will be serving as one of its facilitators says, “this is a peer-to-peer grief support group for whanau who are surviving a loved one’s suicide. We meet regularly and privately to share time, safe space and aroha with others who are grieving.”

These meetings will provide:

  • A safe, respectful, compassionate and non-judgmental space in which to grieve
  • Peer-to-peer support for those who have lost a loved one to suicide
  • Referrals to other organisations and services
  • Private Facebook group for HGG community members to stay connected
A gold coin donation is requested from attendees by the organisers to cover room rent and supplies.
There is a private Facebook group set up to provide information about upcoming meetings, give members an online forum for discussion, and make announcements about related events and programs. Here’s the url: https://www.facebook.com/groups/416298662494169/
