Kāpiti Chamber Inspires Bold Change

Inspirational speakers encouraged bold change in Kāpiti, as part of the Be Bold For Change Campaign for International Women’s Day held on the 8th of March.

An event at Southwards Car Museum, run by the Kāpiti Coast Chamber of Commerce, saw a full house, 220 people, turn out to support women in business, and positive change for women in society, with five dollars of each ticket sold supporting the Kāpiti Performing Arts Centre.

Speakers included: Kate Frykberg, Independent Consultant & Philanthropist; Melissa Clark-Reynolds, Entrepreneur & Professional Director; and Dame Susan Devoy, Race Relations Commissioner who all spoke proudly on their view of “being the best we can be; personal journeys of change, challenge and growth”.

Cohen Holloway, Actor, Writer and 2017 Best Actor Award in NZ Short Film, MC’d the panel with light-hearted entertainment, banter and support for the cause.

Aside from inspirational and heart-wrenching stories of barriers faced by the speakers, the full-house was reminded that it was only two generations ago that higher education was not an option for women, who often escaped menial jobs by jumping into unsuitable marriages that led to generations of domestic violence. These real, gripping stories stuck a note with many in the audience, who were inspired to ensure progress keeps being made in reducing violence in our communities.

A Q&A session at the end of the panel asked the speakers how to break the cycle violence against women. All three women encouraged people to consider what help they can offer in their communities, to reach out to those who are struggling, with Dame Susan asking people to sign the Race Relation Commissioner’s online petition asking for an enquiry of historical abuse.

The last question of the day asked what was the best piece of advice they had received in their careers, with all three urging women to learn how to negotiate, don’t settle for less, and never be afraid to ask for help.

#BeBoldForChange bought valuable lessons to Kāpiti, inspiring women to be brave, make the most of opportunity and never settle for less.
