Historical Plaques unveiled at Waikanae Station

Greater Wellington regional councillor Paul Swain has officially opened the Waikanae Railway Station building which now houses historical plaques marking major events in the station’s history.

Cr Swain, public transport portfolio leader acknowledged the presence at the event of Nathan Guy, MP for Ōtaki, Kāpiti Deputy Mayor Mike Cardiff, Kaumatua Tuki Takiwa, members of the Parata family, Richard Campbell, President of Waikanae Rotary, and members of Keep Waikanae Beautiful, and fellow regional councillors.
“Three years ago, we opened the new station at Waikanae and celebrated the extension of the electric line to Waikanae that was a wonderful community event and it was clear that our investment in Kāpiti was greatly appreciated,” said Cr Swain.

The extension of the commuter line to Waikanae has been a great success with a steady increase in passenger numbers on the Kāpiti line. Evidence of the popularity of the Waikanae commuter service is seen every weekday by the cars lining both sides of the main road. “We’re very aware that this isn’t an ideal situation and we’re working with KCDC to find more park and ride opportunities.
“I’m delighted to see the station’s looking in mint condition, a result of great deal of local pride in it from the flowers on the counter to the photographs donated by Ra Higgott that adorn the walls.
Waikanae has a proud and unique rail history, beginning with the gifting of the land for the right of way from Te Ati Awa chief Wi Parata 130 years ago, and it’s great that it’s being kept alive via the two new wall panels we’re blessing and unveiling today.”

Cr Swain thanked Richard Noakes, GW Senior Fixed Assets Advisor, who has worked closely with the local community and been instrumental in getting these wall panels designed and produced.
“Thanks to everyone who has been involved especially David Parsons, one of the region’s biggest rail enthusiasts, who painstakingly tracked down all the photos for the panels, and to Norma McCallum and her fellow Keep Waikanae Beautiful members for their determination to have the panels reinstated at the station features which will no doubt be enjoyed by regular users and visitors to Waikanae Station for many years to come,” said Cr Swain.
