Schools clean up Kāpiti beaches

Five schools will be cleaning Kāpiti beaches on Tuesday 3 September as part of the Kāpiti PAK’nSAVE Beach Clean Up Day.
Students from Kāpiti College, Ōtaki College, Paraparaumu College, Paraparaumu Beach School and St Peter Channel School will be taking various parts of the beach and collecting rubbish. They will sort it into recyclables and non-recyclables. The school which collects the most per student will be awarded $1000 PAK’nSAVE vouchers.

Environmental groups from the colleges have been keen to take part. Students include all of Year 5 from Paraparaumu Beach School and the whole school of St Peter Channel in Ōtaki. They will work alongside staff from Kāpiti PAK’nSAVE.

“We like to do as much as we can in our community”, says Store Owner/Operator Glen Taylor. “This is a great event because it gets school children to take pride in their environment and we all work together on making a difference in our community. It goes along with all the other measures we have taken to be more sustainable such as reducing power, recycling and upgrading to more efficient refrigeration systems”.

Kāpiti Coast District Council has supplied gloves for participants and will collect and measure the rubbish and recycling. This service is available free-of-charge to all groups that want to run clean-up events in the district. For more information, call (04) 296 4700 and ask to speak to the Waste Minimisation Officer.
