A pawfect opportunity to support your local SPCA

Cupcake Day for the SPCA is here again Monday 26th August

SPCA Cupcake Day is a fun way for the New Zealand public to show their support for the more than 60,000 animals that pass through SPCA Centres throughout New Zealand every year. Thousands of people throughout the country will be baking, selling and eating cupcakes to raise much-needed funds for SPCA Centres from Southland to Kaitaia.

Cupcakes of all shapes, colours and creations will be on sale in streets, malls, schools, businesses and community centres thanks to the thousands of SPCA supporters who have signed up as SPCA Cupcake Cooks. Money raised locally for SPCA Cupcake Day stays local and supports the local SPCA in that area.

SPCA centres across the country are running events with the support of local businesses. Local triathlete Anna Dempsey has volunteered to be Te Kuiti’s ‘Cupcake Queen’ drumming up support for Cupcake Day in the area and encouraging people to sign up as Cupcake Cooks to raise money for the Te Kuiti SPCA. Anna has completed six Ironman triathlons, represented New Zealand twice at the World Long Distance Championships and is representing New Zealand at the upcoming Ironman Championships in Hawaii.

Wairarapa SPCA will be having an open day at their Centre, encouraging local schools to visit to learn more about the SPCA and treat themselves to a cupcake in the process. Many SPCA centres are taking pre-orders of cupcakes and delivering to local businesses in time for morning tea on Monday 26th August Cupcake Day. Keeping it local in Marlborough, Centre Manager Kate Horrey’s own hens will be supplying the eggs for cupcakes they are selling through pre-orders from the centre. Auckland will have more than ten cupcake stands throughout the city as well as selling cupcakes through their SPCA Op Shops.

Keep an eye out for Wellington SPCA staff dressed as animals selling cupcakes at the Railway Station first thing on Monday morning, outside Farmers in Lambton Quay and at City Market.
For those in the South Island, cupcakes will also be available at your local New World store, with the proceeds being distributed to your local SPCA.

Cooking personality Chelsea Winter is supporting the event this year, and will be judging the Most Creative Cupcake competition no pressure! Chelsea has also designed a special cupcake recipe especially for the day, Vanilla cupcakes with strawberry and white chocolate icing. It is delicious!

Cupcake Cooks are strongly encouraged to use SPCA Blue Tick eggs in their cupcakes. These eggs come from hens that are farmed humanely where they are able to display all their natural behaviours happy hens make happy eggs!

Don’t forget that cupcakes are for humans not for your four legged friends. We’ve included a special Pupcake recipe for dogs, without ingredients like sugar or chocolate that may harm them, so your four-legged cupcake lovers can celebrate Cupcake Day too! Pupcakes are safe for your dog to eat, but they are special treats, and should only be offered in moderation.
