Final days for submissions on local government reform

Kāpiti coasters interested in the future of their region are being reminded that they have until 5pm Friday (3 May) to make their views known.
The four Wellington councils represented on the Local Government Reform Working Party (Greater Wellington Region, Wellington City, Porirua City and Kāpiti Coast District Councils) have been consulting on two models for change against the status quo.
Both models for change propose a single council for the region, which may or may not include Wairarapa. One has a single tier of representation a mayor and up to 29 councillors while the other has a mayor and fewer councillors in the first tier up to 21 but a second tier of up to eight local boards. The alternative would be the status quo.
Since going out for public comment, public meetings have been held throughout the region to explain the rationale behind the models for change. To date 1200 submissions have been received.
Following analysis of the feedback, a draft application may be prepared for the Local Government Commission and the four councils would vote whether they support the application or not.
If an application is made, the Commission would then decide whether or not to accept the application, and if so, invite others in the region to submit alternatives.
Those wanting to make a submission on the options should visit www.regionalreform.org.nz
