An independent survey commissioned by Baileys Original Irish Cream has found that New Zealand women are increasingly finding it difficult to take time out for themselves a symptom of modern day society’s ‘rushing women syndrome’.
Half of all New Zealand women surveyed have less than an hour to themselves in any given day, despite the majority agreeing that more than two hours would be ideal. 10% of women surveyed have no time to themselves at all!
Interestingly, the Baileys survey revealed that as age decreased, so did the amount of time that women set aside for themselves. Younger Kiwi women (under 40 years) are less likely to actively book time out for themselves, and are more likely to feel guilty when having time to relax alone.
The women surveyed identified that the most important factor in making more time for themselves was simply remembering to do it. In order of importance, other change factors included: simplifying their life; getting a new job; having a regular babysitter; and/or receiving more support to have time out from their partner.
Over 70% of New Zealand women surveyed don’t book in time for themselves perhaps because almost half of women surveyed feel guilty when having ‘me time’, despite the fact that over 85% of survey respondents feel more productive and clear-headed when they’re regularly taking time out for themselves.
Kara Barnett, of Baileys New Zealand, says that it’s important for women’s health and happiness that they make some time for themselves in the day.
“We can all fall into the trap of rushing around and trying to manage the balancing act that is fitting work, partners, friends, children, exercise, domestic duties and whatever else you need, into your life,” says Barnett.
“Having a special time that is just for you can make the rest of life easier to manage.
The survey we’ve conducted shows that most women like to have time to
themselves in the evening the perfect occasion for a Baileys, especially if it’s alongside a good book or movie.”
