Over 300 local volunteers are have taken part in the Cancer Society’s street collection in Kāpiti this year. With another 50 volunteers behind the scenes, Daffodil Day (31st August 2012) is one of the largest street collections for the Kāpiti community.
Kāpiti Daffodil Day Coordinator Janie Walker says she has been blown away by the positive response from volunteers. “Many collectors have been volunteering for years. Some are quite frail now, yet they give unwavering support to the day.”
Daffodil Day, the Cancer Society’s flagship fundraising event, raises funds to provide supportive care for patients, their carers, whanau, family and friends; fund research; provide information about the ways to reduce the risk of cancer (Smokefree, SunSmart, healthy lifestyle) and publish and provide resources and programmes for patients and medical professionals.
Cancer Society Wellington Division Chief Executive Michael Smith says it’s the volunteers that make Daffodil Day tick. “Most people have a story or two about cancer and it’s this connection which drives people to support us. My heartfelt thanks go out to each and every volunteer who gives up their time and I wish everybody a fruitful Daffodil Day.”
Ms Walker says the Kāpiti community at large has always given generously for the street collection on the 31st. “Everybody gives what they can on the day. Collectively it makes an incredible difference to those in our community that are affected by cancer.”
As well as the street collection, members of the public can find stalls at various locations including Coastlands Mall and Mahara Place. On sale will be fresh daffodils, teddy bears (this year’s bear, Hugo, is proving a hit), pens, tea towels, aprons, jewelry, daffodil cupcakes and raffle tickets.
National Banks are also having stalls and raffles plus Welpet Paraparaumu is running a Daffodil Dog competition (will your dog be the Daffodil Dog of 2012?)
