Local body elections legislation on track

New rules governing local body elections could be in place before the end of next year.

The Government’s confirmed it will reform existing laws following the John Banks donation scandal over his 2010 Auckland mayoral campaign declarations.

Local Government Minister David Carter says they’re on track to have a piece of legislation addressing anonymous donations.

“And have that in place, provided we get cooperation through the house, in time for the next local body election.”

Meanwhile, the Government’s blocked the Labour Party’s attempt to introduce a Bill reforming local body electoral law onto Parliament’s legislative program.
