Kāpiti Playhouse stage Aykbourn’s Gameplan

Kāpiti Playhouse’s final production for the year is GAMEPLAN by Alan Aykbourn.
GAMEPLAN is directed by Tony Tait, better known in Kāpiti Playhouse as an actor but he has directed a number of successful plays for the Mana Little Theatre.
GAMEPLAN is a situational comedy about 16 year old Sorrel who lives with her mother in a riverside London apartment. The mother, Lynette is working as a cleaner since her dot.com business collapsed in the crash. Her husband ran off with her business partner and they can no longer afford to live in their expensive apartment. Sorrel does not want to move or to leave her posh school, and comes up with an idea to raise “easy” money.
Sorrel’s idea is to earn cash as a high-class call girl advertising on the internet. To make herself untraceable, she has set up a website at lovechicks.co.uk, assumed a business name of “Mandy”, and obtained a mobile phone exclusively for her business. She offers only “vanilla” or straight sex.
With help from her gormless friend Kelly she arranges to meet her first client. The play develops this farcical situation with many a twist, resulting in very funny production. But be warned, some content may offend!
GamePlan is one of a trilogy of plays all set in London Docklands, written by Alan Aykbourn for repertory groups. He is a prolific internationally known playwright this is his 58th play first performed in May 2001. A quote from an interview of Aykbourn . “I suppose with GamePlan I wanted to write about the mother-daughter relationship, about the internet and the way kids know more about computers than their parents. The theme is teenage prostitution. There was this piece in the Times about a girl who was using the internet to sleep all over the country, so there is a serious concern there.” (Scarborough Evening News, 27 June 2001).
Performances are at 8 pm on 1820 and 25-27 November and 2.30 pm on 21 November at the Kāpiti Playhouse theatre in Ruahine Street, Paraparaumu.
Bookings should be made through Petronella at 04 905 9295 or [email protected] – prior to ticket sales at Coastlands Customer Service Desk from 2 November 2010.
