Pedal to save petrels!

Imagine a sanctuary for birds like Kāpiti Island, 5500km away in the Pitcairn Islands.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has plans to eradicate rats from Henderson Island in 2011, but is short of funding.

This project is a single effort that will provide lasting ecological benefits for thousands of years in the future by protecting a breeding ground. It only needs to be done once.

Wellington vet Andy Maloney is getting on his bike to raise money. His sponsored cycle (October 2nd- 7th) starts at sea level in Wellington, and finishes at the top of Mt Ruapehu.

BIKE WITH ANDY AND HELP HIM RAISE MONEY!

11.00 Councillor Peter Daniel (former Kāpiti Island ranger) will talk briefly about the importance of pest control on islands, the global context and local examples.

11.30 (approx) Andy will arrive from Wellington. We will all bike the horse trail from the end of Tilley Rd to Mackays Crossing, and the Whareroa Stream Track down to the beach.

12.30 (approx) Bring a picnic lunch to share. Return to Paekākāariki at your leisure, via the beach (it will be low tide) or the Coastal Track. Spare a thought and a dollar or two for Andy as he heads north on his 300km ride and 2800m climb!
