Roll-on summer!

Editor,

I am sure we appreciated your Happy Spring message. However, as most readers will have noticed, the early indicators have already been around for four to five weeks. Those daffodils are now looking a little wilted and the chickens no doubt growing feathers. Spring deniers have presumably missed the early indicators as blooms fade and blossom falls.

In fact, in the coastal North Island, including even Wellington, it’s difficult pushing winter out to more than two months most years. It has been suggested it’s silly calling August winter in our relatively low latitudes, when all the usual northern hemisphere spring indicators are already in evidence. Our seasons, imposed on us by the early settlers from much colder climates, don’t work in our relatively low maritime latitudes.

Roll-on summer!
