Rail upgrade works around rugby and soccer

KiwiRail is planning its work to upgrade the rail network this weekend so fans can take the train to the Lions game on Saturday and the Phoenix game on Sunday.

Trains will be running on Saturday and Sunday afternoons while at other times over the weekend KiwiRail staff and contractors will make progress on the major upgrade of the rail network currently underway.

This will include improvements to the overhead power system in preparation for the new Matangi trains, which are on schedule to enter service later this year. KiwiRail will also take advantage of the time on track to undertake regular maintenance and improvement works.

Buses will replace trains between Plimmerton – Paraparaumu:

  • 10pm Sunday 22 August 5.45am Monday 23 August

Bus replacements will depart Wellington Station from Platform 9 and cannot carry bicycles. More information about bus replacements is available at www.tranzmetro.co.nz or via Metlink on 0800 801 700.

The weekend’s work is part of the Wellington Region Rail Programme, a series of improvements to the Wellington railway system that will give commuters more reliable passenger services. This is a joint initiative between Greater Wellington Regional Council and KiwiRail.
