Call for District Court in Kāpiti

Ōtaki Labour list MP Darren Hughes says good progress has been made in putting together a community case to press the Government for a satellite district court in Kāpiti.
“On Saturday we held a public meeting that was organised by our local Business and Professional Women’s branch. The case for improved access to justice was clear.”
Mr Hughes said the next phase was two-fold. He undertook to collect more data about the use of the district court at Porirua by Kāpiti residents. The other project that members of the community group are working on is exploring wider justice issues than just district court matters and seeing if such a model was right for Kāpiti.
Mr Hughes said it was clear from the meeting that the absence of early access to justice was a situation that needed a remedy.

“In response to my initial enquires, the Government has made it clear that court services are not currently planned for Kāpiti. The job of our community group is to put forward a positive plan and engage with the Government to achieve it.”
