The Friends of the Ōtaki River (FOTOR) is a community group made up of committed members of the community, riparian landowners and representatives from local bodies, iwi, environmental and recreational groups.

What has the group done?
The Friends’ purpose is to represent the community in the management and development of the Ōtaki River and its environment.
The group has been instrumental in the restoration at Chrystalls Bend further up the river above State Highway 1. They are also involved in the restoration of other areas along the river corridor.
The group monitors the management of the Ōtaki River for flood protection and liaises regularly with Greater Wellington’s flood protection group.
Current activities
The Friends of the Ōtaki River regularly grow on eco-sourced native plants in their nursery for river restoration projects. They are focusing on restoring the Ōtaki Estuary over the next few years, in conjunction with GW’s flood Protection, Biosecurity and Environment departments.
The group meet every Wednesday morning on the Ōtaki River, so are encouraging members of the public to come along and help them plant, pot up and grow on plants that will be planted out over the winter planting season. The group also hold public planting sessions during autumn and winter. All are welcome.
