Robin Gunston of Homes for Good says central Kāpiti has a desperate shortage of suitable, smaller homes for Seniors.
“A small estate of mainly 1 bedroom homes is being built in Paraparaumu at present but these start at $598,000 which may be out of reach of many of our Seniors. At present there are only 2 small homes in this area that meet Homes for Good’s criteria as being suitable for an older person and the rents are around $465 per week,” says Mr Gunston.
“Homes for Good has been working all year with Council to help produce a Guide for people considering building an Additional Dwelling in the grounds of an existing dwelling. This is being launched at three upcoming workshops starting on 23rd October. It is free to attend but you must register at www.homesforgood.nz The first 40 people attending each workshop will be given a printed copy of the Guide.”
Mr Gunston says an Additional Dwelling can be really suitable for Seniors as they are easier to care for, made with accessible features to suit a person as they age, have lower energy costs and are generally an economical way to build additional capacity on a section, whether for a Senior to live near their family, or for a young person to move in to watch over the oldies in the main house.
