Toi MAHARA is hosting Portraits, an exhibition of work by participants from the second dementia-friendly art programme initiated by architect and artist Hester Paul.
Ms Paul approached the gallery to trial a class early in 2025. Due to the success of the trial, funding was secured by Paul from the Kāpiti Creative Communities Scheme to enable another 10-week programme at the gallery.
“One of my family members has early onset dementia. I saw the difference that art made to her life and I wanted to make sure others living in the community could receive similar support,” says Ms Paul.
Ten participants attend the weekly class engaging in a different creative activity devised by Paul. The exhibition showcases the portraits the group painted of each other. They have also done leaf rubbings, watercolours and drawings.
Dementia Wellington has supported the development of the programme including providing training to the Toi MAHARA team.
“We’re really grateful to Dementia Wellington for collaborating with us on the programme. The training provided ensured that our staff were well-informed and our spaces were equipped to support participants,” says Toi MAHARA Director Janet Bayly.
Research shows that engaging in the arts can help to maintain cognitive function, build social connections and improve wellbeing.
“A wife of one of the participants said her husband has got so inspired he’s now making art at home.”
Part of Toi MAHARA’s purpose is to provide support to the community. Alongside the benefits to participants, visitors to the gallery get the pleasure of seeing art being made.
“Each week, the Community Space is buzzing. Our visitors have commented on how much they enjoy watching the art being made and hearing the group ‘cracking jokes and talking about life’,” says Ms Bayly.
“A critical part of our work is ensuring art is accessible to everyone, we really enjoy hosting a range of groups and giving them opportunities for doing their own creative work in a safe and supportive atmosphere.”
The programme runs until 17 September. Ms Paul is hoping to secure funding for a programme in term 4.
