Local government only succeeds if people who care for their communities are prepared to serve and stand for office.
It is that time again – three years on – where those who want to make a difference at a political level can start thinking about standing for office. Or perhaps you know someone you think could or should put their hand up for election.
As an elected member of Council or a community board, you’ll be making a positive difference for people and communities for today and into the future.
Kāpiti has a range of positions up for election: Mayor (1), Districtwide Councillor (2), Ōtaki Ward Councillor (1), Waikanae Ward Councillor (2), Paraparaumu Ward Councillor (3), Paekākāriki-Raumati Ward Councillor (1), Maori Ward Councillor (1).
Then there are Five Community Boards; Ōtaki, Waikanae, Paraparaumu, Raumati, and Paekākāriki, all of which will have four members elected.
The final position is for the Kāpiti representative on the Greater Wellington Regional Council (1).
It should be noted that this year for the first time Kāpiti will have a Māori ward alongside the general wards. Voters on the general electoral roll will vote in their general ward, while those on the Māori electoral roll will vote in the Māori ward.
Candidates can stand for more than one position. For instance you could stand for a Ward Councillor position and for a Community Board.
KCNews will publish important dates, candidate profiles, public meetings; forums and other helpful information for candidates and voters.
A couple of important dates to get started with;
Official nominations open 4 July and close 1 August at 12 noon exactly. A tip for all candidates – Don’t leave it until the last minute. Any glitch in the paperwork could see you risk missing the deadline.
The actual election date (although postal voting lasts three weeks) is Saturday October 11, 2025.
