Kāpiti Sport - The 2020 Kāpiti Run for Youth Goes Virtual.
Organisers of the Kāpiti Run for Youth have a message for the thousands who wanted to take part in this year's event - "Spread the word, not the virus inside your bubble. Kāpiti Run for Youth Goes Virtual."
Sometime ago Kāpiti Run for Youth started repositioning the event to take place virtually as New Zealand progressed to Alert Level 4.
Event founder Richard Calkin of Web Genius says having been out with his bubble-members for his daily exercise in the local area over the past few days, he has seen a lot of others out doing the same thing. All well within the Alert Level 4 rules with everyone behaving with common sense and obeying the two-metre rule.
"Did you know you could combine this activity with joining in on a community activity and helping to raise funds for Kāpiti youth-based causes."
The Kāpiti Run for Youth (www.kapitirunforyouth.co.nz) an event that has run every year for the past 10 years raising more than $150,000 for the local community was scheduled for Sunday 29 March on the beach between Paraparaumu and Raumati. That was obviously cancelled (just as well because it was a grotty day). However the event itself is not cancelled it has just gone virtual and is now in a format that is compatible with Alert Level 4.
Mr Calkin says what this means is the criteria for completion of the event are now very flexible. All you need to qualify is to clock up at least 6kms of walking or running (doesn't have to be all at one time) in your neighbourhood during the four-week lockdown period (until Friday 24 April) and that's it.
"Walking or running for exercise in your own locality is a totally acceptable activity during Alert Level 4, so there is no suggestion you will be breaking the rules or putting yourself, anyone else or the community in danger. You just have to do it in your local area alone, or with others in your bubble, keeping two metres from others and using common sense, says Mr Calkin.
"One of the main reasons we are persevering with the event in this format as well as to raise money for some great local causes is to provide an alternative way for us to come together as a community at a time when coming together in the traditional way is not an option for us.
"We'd love you to get involved and pass on the word to others in the community. Why not suggest it to your other bubble-members as an activity to do as a bubble sometime over the next four weeks. Get some exercise while benefiting the local community at the same time. And challenge other bubbles you know to do the same."
Mr Calkin says while the beneficiaries of the fundraising are Kāpiti-based, you don't even need to be in Kāpiti to participate. "Feel free to spread the word and sign up anywhere in New Zealand (or even the world if this does not violate your own lockdown rules)."
